Historic Mine Shafts

Important Information

Important information: historic mine shafts

Last updated: 3 February 2026

In October 2025, three historic mine shafts were identified in specific, cordoned locations within River Valley Country Park. The park has remained open and safe throughout.

What we’ve done

  • The affected spots were immediately fenced and signed and are checked regularly.
  • Specialist mining engineers from Wheal Jane Consultants have inspected the sites and are guiding the permanent solution.
  • Independent checks by our insurers and local authorities have confirmed the park is being managed safely.

Is it safe to stay?

Yes. The shafts are discrete, historic features in clearly marked areas. Outside these fenced zones, normal use of the park is safe. Please simply avoid entering any fenced or signed areas, as you would with any managed works.

What’s next?

Engineer-designed permanent remediation is being scheduled by Simon Crabb Engineering. This includes capping/backfilling and reinstatement to modern standards. While that programme is finalised, the fenced areas will remain in place as a precaution.

Will there be disruption?

Any disruption is limited and localised. From time to time, you may notice small teams at work near a fenced area or brief diversion of a path. If anything affects access to your accommodation, we’ll let you know in advance and provide a simple workaround. Our plan is to carry out works in quieter periods of the season.

Why do mine shafts appear in Cornwall?

Cornwall has a rich mining heritage and many recorded historic workings. Very occasionally, older near-surface features are uncovered. The industry standard response is exactly what we’re doing here: identify, secure, investigate, and permanently make safe under specialist supervision.

Visiting soon?

You can book and enjoy your stay as normal with no reason to have concerns. If you have questions about a particular location or accessibility, the park team is happy to help.
